Martha's Vineyard lies about seven miles off Woods Hole. Its six towns are Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury (Vineyard Haven), West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah, and Chappaquiddick sits just off Edgartown.
Bartholomew Gosnold landed here in 1602 and named the island for his daughter and the wild grapes he found. Many buildings survive from the 1700s, and the beaches are some of New England's most beautiful.
Ferries run from Woods Hole year-round and from Hyannis in season, with schedules that vary by season. On the island, public buses loop between the towns.
